Tacoma stands as the second-largest city in the Puget Sound area, the third-largest in the state, and the seat of government of Pierce County.
Tacoma adopted its name after the nearby Mount Rainier, which was originally called Mount Tacoma. It is known as the "City of Destiny" because the area was chosen to be the site of the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the late 1800s. The decision of the railroad was influenced in part because of Tacoma's neighboring Commencement Bay. By connecting the bay with the railroad Tacoma’s motto became “When rails meet sails.” Today Commencement Bay serves the Port of Tacoma, a major player in international trade on the Pacific Coast. November rains are coming; remember to be prepared The leaves are falling and heavy rains are approaching. Help prevent surface water flooding from affecting streets, businesses and homes in your neighborhood by taking a moment to make sure you’re prepared for the rainy season.
Here’s a quick to-do list:
Keep storm drains clear of leaves and debris by using a broom or rake. Drains near street corners and low areas of streets and parking lots usually need special attention. Remember to be safe; do not wade into flooded areas.
Dispose of fallen leaves and other yard debris properly. City of Tacoma single-family residents can place leaves and yard debris in their brown yard waste container, compost them in their garden or take them to the Tacoma Landfill. Please do not blow leaves into the street; the City does not have a leaf pickup program.
Direct downspouts at least 10 feet away from your home or business, and make sure your gutters are clear of any debris.
